In the same week that he welcomed hundreds of alumni back to campus for Reunion Weekend, celebrated Convocation with the class of 2011, including several distinguished Canadians, and launched a new University brand, Mount Allison President and Vice-Chancellor Dr. Robert Campbell is being honoured for his leadership vision and abilities. Campbell was named to Atlantic Business Magazine’s Top 50 CEO list for 2011 at a gala event in Halifax on May 18.

Campbell says, “I am honoured to receive this distinction but the credit must go to the great team I am part of. Mount Allison is lucky to have many top business and community leaders on its Board of Regents and within its campus community. I feel this award speaks to the success of collaborative quest to be one of the North America’s top undergraduate universities by continuing to offer an exceptional educational and extracurricular experience. That we are able to do this in a fiscally and environmentally-responsible manner, shows a real team effort.”

Mount Allison University has enjoyed a long history of strong leadership and success, being ranked the top undergraduate university in the country by Maclean’s magazine a record 14 times — unmatched by any Canadian university in its category. Under Campbell’s leadership, Mount Allison has placed first for the past four years in a row in the annual rankings.

Campbell says, “Mount Allison University functions in a highly-competitive market environment. To attract the best, you must be the best, and we are continuously working to ensure our resources achieve this. The University, much like a top business operation, must be accountable to many groups — students, faculty, staff, unions, parents, alumni, government, donors, research organizations, and the community — and we work hard to reach these objectives in an increasingly competitive sector.”

Two Mount Allison graduates were also named to Atlantic Business Magazine’s Top 50 CEO list for 2011 including: Brian McMillan (’74), President of Holland College, and Malcolm Fraser (’92), President, CEO, and Founder of ISL.

Mount Allison University is known for preparing its students to become great leaders, as well as attracting ones to its organization. Distinguished graduates who have gone on to become leaders in their fields include:

– The late Wallace McCain, Chairman of Maple Leaf Foods and co-founder of McCain Foods;

– Margaret McCain, former Lieutenant Governor of New Brunswick and Philanthropist;

– Purdy Crawford; distinguished Canadian businessman and lawyer;

– Catherine Callbeck, Senator and first female Premier of PEI;

– Alex Colville, esteemed Canadian painter;

– The Honourable Kevin Lynch, vice-chair, BMO Financial Group and former Clerk of the Privy Council, Secretary to the Cabinet, and Head of the Public Service of Canada.

Currently, Mount Allison’s Board of Regents includes the heads of several Canadian businesses and organizations, most notably CBC’s Chief News Correspondent and Chancellor Peter Mansbridge, and Board Chair and CEO of Moosehead Breweries Bruce McCubbin.

Campbell, Mount Allison University’s 14th President and Vice-Chancellor, began his role in 2006 and has been reappointed for a second five-year term. His strategic plan for Mount Allison has moved the University to long-term financial and environmental sustainability. Under his leadership, Mount Allison has consistently maintained balanced budgets and currently has no debt. The University also has one of the strongest scholarship and bursary programs, per capita, in the country.

Among his outreach activities and commitments, Campbell is currently chair of the executive committee of the Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU), director for the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), a board member for Standards in Education and Learning (SEAL), and co-chair of the Southeast New Brunswick Industry and Education Council.
