It’s always a nice compliment to our town when people from away set up roots in Sackville because it was the most appealing place to live compared to other communities in the Maritimes.
Like many people who come to Sackville but are not attached to Mount Allison, the family of Darin Bavis, Michelle Beaulieu, and Oliver Forest looked to set up a business in downtown Sackville. Their new art and gift shop, Earth, on 10 York Street (by Pridham’s Studio and Joey’s) is the latest addition to the streetscape.
To say that Darin has a niche when it comes to his mushroom art is an understatement. I have had the pleasure of witnessing first hand the pleasant expressions on people’s faces when they see his detailed drawings on dehydrated fungi. I saw him taking orders from international students to be shipped to the other side of the world for a present. Not surprisingly, they are truly very unique, and their appeal is broad which is apparent when he comes back from stacks of orders from trade shows.
This mushroom art was the foundational launching pad for the new store. There is no shortage of eye-popping art and gift ideas from exclusively Maritime artists. This is a place where you can get something for yourself or for someone else that they will not find anywhere else . . . that I can guarantee.
For starters, the place is loaded with some of the coolest birdhouses I have ever seen. If you like birds and want a house for them, cancel your trip to Wal Mart and head to Earth. The birds will feel so special they will tell their friends. If you like pottery, there is no shortage of unique pieces. I was particularly impressed with these dull glazed skull mugs that would be perfect for a high end Scotch or Whiskey.
There is beautiful artwork on the walls for sale, earrings, cutting boards, burnt art from fallen barns on the marsh, and even artistic wooden and metal fish that make you smile. All the art and gifts in the store are represented by Maritime artists with an impressive representation from Sackville artisans.
Darin and Michelle have created a very impressive store and given us all another reason that if anyone is in the market for world class art and gift ideas they do not have to leave Sackville. If this trend keeps up, I can see downtown Sackville being known for having the most unique shops around. Make a point to head down to Earth. It’s a great place.
