Following a successful first season in 2008, Sackville's farmers market will take to the streets again this year.
Bringing the market outdoors on downtown Bridge Street last summer enabled the market to flourish and the community plans to further expand the initiative in the years to come.
"We had an extremely fruitful street market last year," said Coun. Virgil Hammock, liaison councillor for the town's tourism department. "And I think this is an area that will only continue to grow in our community."
Throughout the summer months last year, the popular indoor market inside Bridge Street Cafe expanded out into the street, a move that brought a liveliness and vibrancy to the downtown atmosphere.
The market has an eclectic mix of baked goods, ethnic foods, produce, breads, crafts, wines and more. Live music also adds to the scene, while shoppers have the opportunity to browse the vendors' wares as well as the downtown shops along Bridge Street.
Hammock said he believes the market could, in the years to come, become a draw for visitors from all over the Maritimes.
"I think this will eventually become an exciting and large market that will attract hundreds of people to our area," he said.
The outdoor market will get an even earlier start this season, with town council giving the green light earlier this month to allow for Saturday morning closures of Bridge Street starting May 16. The market -- a collaboration of the Sackville Farmers' Market committee, Mainstreet Redevelopment and the tourism department -- will run on Saturday mornings from 8 a.m. to noon until Sept. 26.
