The Tantramar region was spared no mercy from Mother Nature over the weekend as post-tropical storm Hanna let out its wrath on the Maritimes.
Hammering the area with more than 100 mm of rain throughout the day on Sunday, the storm has left many communities in the area with washed-out roads and bridges and hundreds of residents with flooded basements.
"We have a lot of work ahead of us," said Sackville's public works director George Woodburn on Monday evening.
Woodburn said public work crews have been out in full force since Sunday morning, repairing the damage caused by the heavy rainstorm.
"Obviously the greatest event that occurred was on King Street, where we lost a huge chunk of the road," he said.
It was early Sunday afternoon when reports came in about the washout on King Street, about a kilometre past Crossman Road, and Woodburn said several crews were quickly called in to close the road to traffic and begin the work of replacing the culvert. The work continued throughout the afternoon but, due to the large flow of water, could not be completed until the water subsided.
Public work crews were again on site throughout the day on Monday and the road was expected to be re-opened by late Monday night.
Although most of the damage was confined to King Street, Woodburn said flooding did occur throughout the low-lying areas of town including several locations along Main Street, Walker Road, Ogden Mill Road, Queens Road, and, of course, Lorne Street. Public works staff were sent out early on Sunday to begin clearing catch basins and setting up barricades as needed.
Over the next few days, he said, repairs will also be required to washed-out road shoulders.
Sackville's CAO Barry Carroll said town staff is keeping track of the damage that has been done and the costs associated with the storm clean-up. He explained the town will be submitting a claim to the provincial government in hopes of being reimbursed for the repair work.
