Tantramar area residents are invited to run, walk, jog, wheel or ride this Sunday afternoon to help in the search for a cure for cancer.
Terry Fox Runs are taking place throughout the region this weekend and everyone is encouraged to take part in the 29th annual fundraising event on Sept. 13.
Legendary Canadian Terry Fox, who was struck with bone cancer at the tender age of 18 and had his right leg amputated above the knee, was in the midst of running across Canada to raise money for cancer research when tragedy struck on Sept. 1, 1980. After being on the road for 143 days and running more than 5,000 kilometres, Terry was forced to end his Marathon of Hope just outside of Thunder Bay, Ont. because the cancer had spread to his lungs. He died the following year.
Today, nearly three decades later, hundreds of local communities are continuing his legacy, hoping to someday eradicate the widespread disease.
The local runs, which will be held rain or shine, are open to walkers, runners, cyclers and rollerbladers. (It is mandatory to wear bicycle helmets.)
