A whole weekend of fun and learning is in store with two events hosted by the Tantramar Family Resource Centre this weekend in Sackville.

As part of the Town of Sackville's WinterFest, the TFRC is hosting the Winter Trivia Challenge, a Family's Day Out activity that is free for families of all ages and stages. Taking place at Beech Hill Park on Feb. 4 from 1-3 p.m., the event will allow families to test their knowledge of all things winter, and enter to win a fun literacy prize pack from the TFRC.

The TFRC provides a variety of services and activities for families in the Tantramar Area. Family Literacy refers to how families use reading, writing and communicating to work, learn and play together - both at home and in their community. It's about families taking time to develop relationships.

Everyday activities that parents share with their children are not only learning opportunities for the child, but the parents as well. When families take time to read, explore a city or countryside, visit a museum or park, bake or cook, share stories or celebrate traditions together, they are practicing family literacy.

"Adding an element of fresh air helps to make learning easier, especially for those who need to move around to process their ideas," says Family's Day Out project coordinator Stacey Merrigan. "This fun trivia challenge encourages physical exercise and sneaks in some learning, too."

On Feb. 3, the TFRC will host Journey Through Learning, a Family Literacy Day celebration, at Salem Elementary School from 5-7 p.m. This event was originally scheduled for Jan. 27, but was postponed due to weather conditions.

Journey Through Learning will allow families to explore many types of literacy through fun games and activities that suit the whole family. Pizza will be provided for all in attendance, and there will even be an appearance by children's author Sheree Fitch.

For more details on the event, contact the Tantramar Family Resource Centre at 939-TFRC (8372) or email info@tantramarfamily.ca.

Journey Through Learning and the Winter Trivia Challenge are part of the Family's Day Out program. Funded by a grant from the United Way of Greater Moncton and Southeastern New Brunswick, Family's Day Out events encourage family literacy by providing free events each month for families of all kinds to enjoy together.
