Mount Allison University's Garnet and Gold Musical Theatre Society is set to present Rodgers and Hammerstein’s The Sound of Music. The show runs Jan. 24-26 at 8 p.m. at Convocation Hall on the Mount Allison campus, with a matinée on Saturday at 2 p.m. Doors open 30 minutes before show time.

Based on the true story of the von Trapp family, a spirited postulant nun is sent to work as a governess to the seven children of a former naval captain. Her unconventional methods lead the family through Austria’s turmoil of the late 1930’s with love and music.

Fans of the classic 1965 movie will recognize familiar tunes My Favourite Things, Do Re Mi and The Sound of Music.

Over 100 Mount Allison students and local community members have been working hard since October to stage the musical.

This year’s production boasts a 26-piece orchestra directed by fourth year music student Dylan Maddix, and a two-storey set designed by drama student Tom Hearn. Karen Valanne returns for a third year in a row as artistic director, while long-time member and former society president Justin Thomas steps in as technical director.

The cast features fourth year student Kat Stobbs as Maria and first year student Ben Winn as Captain von Trapp, and also community members Alex Rhindress and Gillian Throop as the youngest von Trapp children.
