Now that second semester has started up at Tantramar, the students and teachers are kicking it back into high gear with lots of different fundraisers and activities that will surely draw some crowds.
The month of January was a tough one, as students and teachers prepared for exams. Our ninth graders worked hard to complete the ELPA (English Language Proficiency Assessment), while the seniors scrambled to fill in university applications and gather information on bursaries and scholarships.
At the end of the month, Tantramar will be participating in a fundraiser called Spin & Swish. This event, which takes place on Tuesday, Feb. 26, involves teams of 5-7 people collecting pledges to spin their wheels at the Colliseum and getting a chance to shoot a puck in the net during intermission at the Wildcats game to win $10,000 for their school. Ninety percent of the proceeds from this event are given to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, while the remaining 10 per cent will be used for graduation activities.
Tantramar would like to wish our improv team good luck as they prepare for the Regional Improv Games, which will be held once again at the Moncton Lions Club on St. George Street. The games are being held on Thursday, Feb. 21, through Saturday, Feb. 23. Tantramar competes Friday Feb. 22, at 6 p.m. in round 2 of 3 rounds. There are 11 teams in total who are competing, with only four advancing to the finals, which are held on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. Tantramar’s team consists of 10 students and is led by two wonderful coaches, who also happen to be Titan alumni, Dylan Cunningham and Megan Fournier. If they win this competition the team will travel all the way to Ottawa to compete with other great improv teams. Our Tantramar team placed second last year and is looking to succeed once again.
It is dragon boat time and Tantramar is once again planning to enter the most teams of all the high schools in Anglophone East. These boats include many from last year and some newer ones: The Incredibles, Guardians, Voyagers, Motor Boat, Titanic, Titan Force (staff alumni boat), Titanium and Black Pearl. Tantarmar has participated in the fundraiser for the Moncton Lions Sick Children fund since it began 8 years ago. Our two-time defending champions, the Guardians, consists of many strong rowers who are planning to repeat a third time. Last year in total our boats raised over $24,000 and we hope to meet this goal again this year. The races are being held on Friday, May 24th and Saturday May 25th. Save the date and come to Jones Lake to cheer on the Titans.
The Incredibles dragon boat will be having a fundraiser for the IWK on Thursday, Feb. 21, at the local Pizza Delight. They will be donating 20 per cent of their sales that day to the Incredibles dragon boat. Come on out and support your local Titans, and IWK, with this amazing event.
We give many thanks to everyone in our community who have shown a tremendous amount of support to our Titans. Be sure to look forward to many great events to follow in the second half of our school year, and we appreciate everything that our community has done for us.
