SACKVILLE, N.B. – The Mount Allison Performing Arts Series will host a thrilling evening of taiko drumming by Fubuki Daiko (Blizzard Drums) at Brunton Auditorium, 134 Main Street, on Tuesday, Feb. 4, at 8 p.m.

The Winnipeg-based ensemble presents a breathtaking musical experience: part martial arts athleticism, part meditation and all rhythm. There is something for everyone in this electrifying program.

Originating in Japan, taiko drumming has now become a worldwide phenomenon embraced by hundreds of professional and amateur groups in North America alone. Fubuki Daiko seeks to redefine and enliven this ancient art form, producing eclectic original works that create a new voice for the traditional taiko.

The founding members of Fubuki Daiko – Hiroshi Koshiyama and Naomi Guilbert – have over 20 years of taiko experience, including four years of apprenticeship under grandmaster Seiichi Tanaka, the father of North American taiko. As part of the Blizzard Drums touring ensemble, they have performed at festivals, concert halls, and schools across Canada and the United States. Collaborations with a wide range of groups – including choirs, ballet companies, and jazz combos – have continued to fuel Fubuki Daiko’s quest for excellence and innovation in taiko performance. Their debut CD, Fubuki, received a Prairie Music Award for Outstanding Instrumental Recording.

On Monday, Feb. 3, at 1:30 p.m., Fubuki Daiko will present a demonstration of their instruments and playing techniques, along with a discussion of the musical traditions of Japanese taiko. Presented by the music department of Mount Allison University, this workshop is free of charge and members of the public are encouraged to attend.
