Super 8 Film stock by Struts & Faucet artist in residence Kyle Whitehead.

Struts Gallery & Faucet Media Arts Centre members recently welcomed open studio artist-in-residence Kyle Whitehead. Whitehead will be at the gallery from until April 18.

Area residents are invited to come out to welcome Whitehead and learn more about his art practice at a free artist talk on Friday, Mar. 28, at 7 p.m.

Each year Struts & Faucet hosts a series of artist residencies through their open studio program. Each artist-in-residence spends five weeks at the gallery continuing their practice in a public venue. The visiting artists present talks on their work, studio visits and other public presentations as well as workshops related to the work they are engaged in. All open studio events are free to attend, and all are welcome.

Whitehead is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily with small-format cinema, experimental sound and electronics. His work has recently been exhibited at Antimatter Festival (Victoria, B.C.), Soundasaurus (Calgary, Alta.), M: ST 6 (Calgary, Alta), Smiths Row Gallery (Bury St. Edmunds, UK), Galerie Sans Nom (Moncton, N.B.), Eastern Edge (St. Johns, NL), and Latitude 53 (Edmonton, Alta). Kyle received his BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design and currently resides in Calgary.

While at Struts & Faucet, Whitehead will be collaborating with local artists and filmmakers, inviting them to drop in and “swap” Super 8 films with him. He has several re-loadable Kaccema Super 8 film cartridges. Using these Kaccema cartridges, films will be exposed, reloaded and then given to collaborators who will be charged with re-exposing the film material with no prior knowledge of the content of the preceding exposure. In addition to presenting an artist talk and collaborating with the community on Super 8 filmmaking, Whitehead will facilitate a workshop on hand processing black and white Super 8 film on Saturday, Mar. 29, at 1 p.m., and will host a screening of the films produced during his residency on Thursday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m.

For more information on Whitehead, the open studio residency program, or any Struts & Faucet programming, phone 506-536-1211 or visit www.strutsgallery.ca.
