The outreach committee of Sackville United Church is extending an invitation to local residents to participate in their annual Earth Hour celebration, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Mar. 29 at the Manning Room of the Mount Allison Chapel.

Earth Hour is a global initiative in partnership with the World Wildlife Federation (WWF). Over the years, individuals, businesses, governments, and communities have been encouraged to turn out their lights at 8:30 for one hour as a symbolic gesture of support for environmentally sustainable action. Originating in Sydney, Australia in 2007, the Earth Hour concept has since spread to millions of people in over 7,000 cities in 152 countries across every continent.

Earth Hour has always been more than a lights-off campaign; positive environmental outcomes are being seen by the event organizers as they strive to achieve their long-term vision. In the face of the threat of an unsustainable future, the grassroots nature of the Earth Hour movement and the can-do attitude of its participants to mobilize action, are the tipping points helping to deliver real environmental outcomes, both big and small.

Participants of all ages are invited to the Manning Room at the Mount Allison Chapel at 7:30 p.m. where they will have the opportunity to enjoy some refreshments, to socialize with others, and to join in playing their favourite board games. At 8:30, the lights go out, and candles are the only luminaries for the next hour.

“Our committee is happy to have the opportunity to host Earth Hour again for the fifth year. Those in attendance have represented a wide variety of ages and interests, all coming together to enjoy a one-of-a-kind relaxing evening with like-minded individuals sharing a common concern,” says committee member Judith Colwell.
