The village businesses and residents of Port Elgin are coming together this Friday, Feb. 26 to raise funds for the victims of the recent earthquake in Haiti.

Mayor Judy Scott said Friday that the local credit union outlet started the ball rolling when it joined its sister branches in Moncton and Salisbury in its Mission Possible:Haiti initiative.

"As a business, we wanted to take part in the fundraiser as well. Then when other local businesses heard about it, they wanted to do something too and it's just gone from there," Scott, who is also manager of the Advanced Savings Credit Union in the village, said.

Mission Possible, originally an initiative of the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce, was formed in 2009 to focus on raising funds to help make a difference in the Greater Moncton community.

Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti on Jan. 12, members of the initiative launched a fundraising project to raise funds to help the people in need in Haiti and the credit union took up the cause as well.

Although the village of Port Elgin is small, most local businesses will be offering special incentives all day Friday, with a portion of the proceeds from the sale of each particular item going to Haiti relief.

"Sure we're just a small community, but everyone has been very enthusiastic and generous about the day-long event so we hope that everyone in the area will come out and support this very worthy cause," Scott said.
