Support for locally-grown food is on the rise in the region and Renaissance Sackville is teaming up with the community's farmers' market to host an event that will take advantage of that increasing popularity.
The two groups are hosting a Local Food Day in Sackville on Saturday, Aug. 15, essentially a larger version of the weekly Saturday morning Bridge Street market.
The Local Food Day, which is expected to attract new vendors and organizations to the market, will be an opportunity for them to showcase what they have to offer, while educating the public more about all that is available in the region.
Coun. Virgil Hammock said this event will hopefully attract a variety of new vendors to Sackville's market, expanding an already-popular initiative. Interest has already been shown from vendors from Dieppe and Moncton, he said.
"This is a really good opportunity for them to come down and see our street market," said Hammock during a special council meeting last Wednesday afternoon, in which councillors approved a time extension to allow Bridge Street to remain closed for an additional hour-and-a-half than usual that day.
Sackville's Local Food Day, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, will be advertised throughout the region, inviting people to come to the market to taste the produce of the local region, meet local farmers, buy from local artisans, listen to local music and win great door prizes.
