When travellers stop for a bathroom break at Sackville's highway commercial area, they may just get the impulse to visit the downtown afterwards.
This is because new interpretive displays of the town will be installed in washrooms at several of the businesses along Sackville's highway area that visitors frequent the most.
Cary Murray, the town's director of community economic development and tourism, said with funds recently approved in this year's capital budget ($9,000) his department will be "branding the businesses with Sackville imagery"
"So at least when you stop and have a pee at the Irving, you know you're in Sackville," he said.
"I know it sounds silly but according to the province of New Brunswick, it's an effective marketing method."
Funds in the amount of $15,000 were also approved for improvements to Sackville's tourist information centre, which will include the installation of two new doors on the washrooms, landscaping around the deck and stairs, new exterior signage, and the construction of a new storage barn.
"The barn we have over by Payzant's (Home Hardware) is falling apart and we need to build a new one," said Murray.
The tourism department has also been allotted $5,000 for event kiosks and $10,000 for new Christmas lights in the 2008 budget, approved during council's regular meeting on Feb. 11.
