Murray Beach Provincial Park will open up several new sites for seasonal campers by next summer.
Tantramar MLA Mike Olscamp said the Department of Tourism recently confirmed that the government will set aside about $30,000 in next year's budget to add eight to 10 more sites in the park.
Although Olscamp said he's pleased the upgrades will be made to Murray Beach campground in 2010, he's disappointed they won't be completed until next year's tourism season.
"Originally, it was supposed to be in the (2009) capital budget, but for some reason I've been told that it's not in the cards for this year," he said.
The Conservative MLA said he's been lobbying for the new sites (with electrical hook-up) for Murray Beach for more than two years and pointed out the park is one of the few in the province that actually generates enough revenue to "break even" each year.
"The park has a lot of potential . . . and there's lots of room for expansion there."
Demand for camping sites has been steadily rising in the province, particularly in times when New Brunswickers are traveling less outside the Maritimes.
"With the economy the way it is, people aren't going to travel as far with their trailers anymore," he said.
The park is located along the Northumberland Strait, a few kilometres from the Confederation Bridge in Little Shemogue.
