Two people were injured and sent to hospital following a motor vehicle accident that saw a car veer off the highway, roll down an enbankment and catch on fire near Sackville Monday afternoon.
Cpl. Don Moore said the accident is still under investigation although alcohol and speed have already been ruled out as factors in the single-vehicle crash.
"It'll likely be chalked up to driver error," said Moore. "It's probably due to someone who simply wasn't paying attention and got distracted."
Moore said two of the five people inside the vehicle were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, likely thanks to the fact they were all wearing their seatbelts when the car drove off the highway near the Walker Road exit, slid down the bank and rolled over three times before landing upright.
"They're lucky it landed on its wheels and not the roof," said Moore.
He said fortunately the driver and the passengers, who were from Ontario, all got out safely with no significant injuries. Moore said the driver had to pull one of the passengers out of the vehicle but the other three climbed out unassisted.
It is still undetermined whether any charges will be laid in the incident.
Sackville firefighters responded to the accident at about 1:30 p.m. on Monday and had the flames out within minutes of arriving on the scene, said Fire Chief Craig Bowser.
"It was fully engulfed when we got there and we put it out very quickly. There was definitely nothing salvageable."
