A 17-year-old Sackville boy is behind bars after a 20-year-old male was killed during a fight that broke out last Thursday night in Point-de-ChÊne.
The Sackville youth has been charged with second-degree murder in the death of Nathanial McFadden of Shediac, RCMP Sgt. Claude Tremblay said Tuesday.
Police reports stated the fight broke out between the two individuals around 6 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8 at a house in Point-de-Chene, escalated and moved outdoors.
"Shediac RCMP responded to a disturbance, the victim had been stabbed by an object and taken to hospital," said Tremblay.
McFadden was pronounced dead at the Moncton Hospital as a result of his injuries about three hours after being transferred from the scene of the incident, Tremblay said, adding the 17-year-old fled the scene by car and was later arrested in Sackville.
"He was arrested around midnight, with a female companion," said Tremblay.
The girl was questioned and later released. She did not take part in the fight.
Neighbours of the house where the fight took place say they were shocked to see their quiet community transformed into a murder scene overnight.
"I'm not sure when the last murder was. It could have been a good 10 to 12 years ago," said Tremblay.
The Sackville teen, who cannot be identified under the Youth Criminal Justice Act due to his age, appeared in provincial court on Friday.
The accused waived his right to a bail hearing and will appear in court again on Feb. 2. In the meantime, the accused is banned from contacting five individuals linked to the case. The incident is considered isolated, and police are not looking for any other suspects.
