An upcoming council trip to Whistler, B.C. has drawn concerns from at least one local resident, who says the town should be more fiscally prudent amidst tough economic times.
"To me, it's a little bit wasteful, sending three councillors to FCM," said Sabine Dietz during council's monthly meeting on April 14.
The trip, which will see Sackville's Deputy Mayor Bob Berry and councillors Merrill Fullerton and Bruce Phinney travel to Whistler in June for this year's Federation of Canadian Municipalities annual meeting, was approved by council last month with all eligible expenses paid.
But Dietz, who contacted a member of Moncton council earlier this month, said their city of 60,000 is only sending two delegates.
Sackville council members, however, have been touting the value of the trip, saying it's important to network with other communities across the country who are facing similar challenges to Sackville and who may be able to offer solutions.
Dietz said that if town council needs to send representatives to the annual conference, she hopes that the ones who do go will be actively networking on sustainability planning for the community.
