Vandalism and break-ins continue to be ongoing problems in Sackville and several town council members say they believe video surveillance could be the answer.
"I've seen vandalism rise over the past couple years . . . and to me, it's a serious issue," said Coun. Merrill Fullerton during council's August meeting.
"I'd like to see something done. And unless we get more police officers on the street, I think we should look into the cost of surveillance cameras for our downtown."
Fullerton said he'd like to see an estimated cost of a video surveillance system for the town's 2010 budget. And he also requested that staff look into whether other communities have had success with similar methods.
Sackville RCMP Cpl. Patricia Levesque said she has seen video surveillance cameras in action and agreed it can discourage criminal activity. She said in the last community she worked, the municipality posted a camera in a park which was being regularly vandalized and "the difference was astounding."
Acting CAO Michael Beal said cameras have been considered in the past to deter vandals and thieves, but he noted infrared cameras for nighttime viewing can be expensive.
