In an effort to enhance policing services in Sackville, town council has appointed a citizens' advisory committee that will set out to improve communications and accountability measures between the public and the local RCMP force.

Mayor Pat Estabrooks said the committee, made up of a handful of local residents, will work to develop "local linkages needed for the highest quality of policing services in the town."

"Council understands that policing is a priority for the community and believes that a strong citizens' committee will be key to ongoing quality policing," she said during last Monday's monthly council meeting.

The committee's mandate will be to: provide an ongoing focus on police services; develop recommendations for improvements to the policing system (taking the fiscal capacity of the town into consideration); develop greater community accountability and responsiveness for police services; and to maximize police service contributions, in an effort to build a safe and welcoming community.

The committee, which is made up of Gerry Bartlett, Barb Wheaton, Donna Ward, Chris Porter, Wayne Anderson, Louis Lambe and Shawn Mesheau, has already held its first meeting and will be meeting again in October.

"I am pleased to have such dedicated individuals on the new committee and look forward to working with them on a topic that is so important to town citizens."

Estabrooks said the committee is looking forward to hearing from the public on matters relating to policing. If anyone would like to meet the committee or comment on policing, address correspondence to Citizens Committee on Policing, Town of Sackville, P.O. Box 6191, Sackville, N.B. E4L 1G6.
