After six months without a town manager, Sackville has a new Chief Administrative Officer back in place.
Eric Mourant, a bilingual New Brunswicker from Fredericton, was appointed Monday night to take on the town's top administrator position, replacing former CAO Barry Carroll who resigned from the post last August.
"He's got great experience at the municipal, provincial and territorial levels," said Coun. Margaret Tusz-King, who chaired the search committee for the new CAO.
"And we're pleased that Mr. Mourant has wanted to come to Sackville to join us."
Town council unanimously supported the decision Monday night to hire Mourant, a move that follows an extensive six-month search process that drew more than 50 applicants from across Canada.
Tusz-King said following Carroll's resignation last August, the town hired the head-hunting firm Gerald Walsh & Associates to help with the process.
Throughout the fall, the search committee - consisting of Tusz-King, Deputy Mayor Bob Berry, Coun. John Higham and Coun. Mike Tower - worked with Gerald Walsh to clarify the needs of the municipality and participate in the advertising process, as well as receiving applications.
Gerald Walsh then prioritized the candidates with the best credentials, as well as those who had direct connections with the Maritime region, and short-listed four candidates for the search committee. Those applicants were interviewed in early December.
Tusz-King said that the search committee selected Mourant as the town's primary candidate the following month, inviting him to meet the council and mayor.
"Following about three hours of introductions, questions, answers and discussions, council unanimously directed the search committee to bring forward a motion at our February council meeting to appoint Eric Mourant as our new Chief Administrative Officer for the town," she explained.
A chartered accountant who has worked in the public, private and civil sectors, Mourant most recently served as the executive director of the New Brunswick Association of Nursing Homes, during which time he led the organization in strategic planning, public information campaigns and enhanced provincial government support for nursing home services throughout the province.
Mayor Pat Estabrooks said she is satisfied the town has a found a high-quality, skilled CAO.
"At this time, when council is working with staff on a municipal strategic plan, Mr. Mourant's excellent skills in organizational development, strategic planning, finances and human relations will be valuable," said Estabrooks.
The mayor and council gave praise to town treasurer Michael Beal, who has served as acting CAO for the past six months and taken on an extra workload, as well as the support staff at town hall who have also put in extra time and effort.
