Sackville town council and staff are taking several giant leaps forward in their efforts towards implementing a new vision for the community.

Several recommendations from Sackville's new strategic plan were approved during council's monthly meeting last Monday night, including one that will see a review of town staff and programs conducted and another that will transform the monthly council meeting format.

Council gave the go-ahead for the town's new chief administrative officer Eric Mourant to get the process of a human resource management plan under way - which will include a review of the management structure, existing staff positions and succession planning.

The CAO is expected to submit a first chapter of recommendations on this issue to council at next month's meeting.

Mourant said staff and council will also be making modifications to the monthly council meetings to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the sessions.

He explained that department heads will now present the highlights of their written reports to council, rather than the specific councillors designated to that department. He said the full reports from each department head will be released on the town's website prior to the public meetings to ensure full transparency.

"This should help accelerate the meeting," said Mourant.

Any questions pertaining to department operations will be directed toward that department head, and all other issues or concerns raised during the meetings will be directed towards the CAO.

The aim of the revised meeting format is to limit the sessions to no longer than 90 minutes and to ensure the public is provided with all relevant documentation prior to the meetings.

These recommendations stem from the community's new strategic plan document, which was developed by Mount Allison professor Michael Fox and his community planning students earlier this winter, in consultation with local residents.

Council also appointed the CAO as the communication officer for the town, another priority that was targeted in the strategic plan as one of the steps towards developing a clear communications policy for Sackville. The mayor will remain the spokesperson for the municipality.
