A pair of Tiger Swallowtail butterflies will soon make their home atop Sackville’s new water tower.
The winged insects will be featured on both sides of the elevated tank as part of a new logo design that has been created specifically for the town’s 110-foot water tower.
The final artwork was chosen from a field of 15 submissions from local designers, which was then narrowed down to three choices that were voted on by the public.
Eric Mourant, Sackville’s chief administrative officer, said the committee in charge of the town’s logo project received just over a dozen responses from residents, many favouring the design that was chosen.
Mourant said from the input that was received, it was decided to change the Monarch Butterfly that was originally included in the design to the Tiger Swallowtail, a more common species in the region and “more representative of Sackville.”
Created by Tin Design Group of Sackville, the new logo also features the Sackville wordmark nestled in a lighter background of reeds and leaves.
Coun. Merrill Fullerton, a member of the selection committee, said although all three final designs were “excellent and each effective in their own way,” several factors played into making the final decision – including cost, legibility and whether it would effectively represent the community.
“We wanted a design that would be reflective of our natural landscape . . . something that would speak to the importance that our local environment has to our quality of life,” said Fullerton.
The committee consisted of Fullerton, Mourant, Coun. Virgil Hammock, assistant director of community economic development/tourism Rebekah Cant and public works director George Woodburn.
Hammock said legibility of the logo was the clincher in the final decision.
“All three were excellent designs but this one has a better visual impact,” he said. “You’ll be able to see it better from a distance away.”
The logo was designed only for the water tower, and not for town signs or letterheads as previously reported. It is expected to take about nine days to complete the project once painting on the tower gets under way.
The water tank was raised last Tuesday, giving Sackville’s skyline a brand new look.
Construction got under way last year on the long-awaited $4-million project, which was contracted out to Landmark Ontario Ltd.
Located off Hesler Drive, the water tower has been at the top of the town’s priority list for nearly a decade amidst concerns over water quality and adequate pressure. The new structure will allow an extra storage capacity of 550,000 gallons, offering the town greater protection in case of major fire in the community.
