Continuing to work on addressing garbage issues in the community, a committee of council has been meeting with representatives of other surrounding municipalities to find a workable solution in bringing local apartment building owners back on board with the wet-dry recycling program.
Coun. Margaret Tusz-King, chair of the ad-hoc committee established earlier this year to discuss local garbage concerns, said her group recently met with representatives from Westmorland Albert Solid Waste Corporation, as well as engineers from Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview to discuss the matter. Those three communities are already working on implementing the wet-dry system for multi-unit buildings.
Also on-hand for the meeting were the garbage haulers from the area, who discussed the challenges or obstacles they face in putting the blue-green program in place at apartment buildings.
The committee, which was put into place to clear up a number of problems with the current garbage contract before the next contract comes up for renewal at the end of next year, will also be reviewing possible alternatives for garbage collection – such as utilizing town staff and vehicles to do the job, or partnering with other municipalities for the service.
Also serving on the committee are councillors Mike Tower, Bruce Phinney and John Higham along with public works and engineering director George Woodburn
