Sackville officially launched its anniversary year on Jan. 1 but the full line-up of events for the town's 250th celebrations won't be unveiled until April or May.
Colin Penley, chair of the Sackville 250 organizing committee, said the New Year's Day levee at the Marshlands Inn served as the kick-off event for the 2012 festivities, with the town launching some of the promotional materials to help commemorate the anniversary such as Sackville 250 postcards and pins.
But Penley told town council last week that the main schedule of activities that are being planned for the year won't be finalized until later in March, when the funding requests have been approved by Heritage Canada.
The town's organizing committee has applied for funding through Heritage Canada's Community Anniversaries grant but won't know until this spring how much money it will get to put toward the myriad of events that have been proposed.
More than a dozen proposals were submitted from groups like the Tantramar Heritage Trust, Live Bait Theatre, the Early Music Festival, Struts Gallery, the local hospital auxiliary and the university's student council group, with a number of activities and events that could be included in the year-long line-up of festivities. These include everything from live theatrical productions to a fashion show, from a ‘town and gown' dance to a heritage dinner, from musical numbers to postcard artwork, from a fountain sculpture to a historic photo exhibit, and everything in between.
