Two people were sent to hospital Friday night after suffering from smoke inhalation following a late-night fire that destroyed their home.
Sackville Fire Chief Craig Bowser said firefighters were called to the scene of the fire on Ogden Mill Road around 11:30 p.m. on Friday. Upon their arrival, the fire had already engulfed much of the one-and-a-half storey home and was starting to come through the roof.
"The house was a total loss," he said.
The couple, who had been renting the home, lost their pet dog in the fire but were both able to make it out of the burning home before it spread too far.
"Both were outside when we arrived," said Bowser.
The chief said he dispatched the RCMP and an ambulance to the scene and they looked after the couple from there. The two were sent to hospital, where they were treated for smoke inhalation. Both were released from the hospital over the weekend.
The Canadian Red Cross has stepped in to provide assistance for the couple - including temporary accommodations, food, and comfort items.
Bowser said the fire is still being investigated.
"We don't know how the fire got started," he said, noting the owner did have insurance on the home.
More than 30 volunteer firefighters were at the scene, working through the night to keep the fire contained. Bowser said although it was a cold night, the firefighters once again did a good job in fighting the elements.
