Sackville town council is considering a rezoning of the old fire and police station on Main Street in an effort to open it up for greater development opportunities.

“In order to facilitate a wider range of uses on the property, it’s being proposed that it be rezoned,” said Lori Bickford, director of the Tantramar Planning District commission, during a public hearing for the rezoning request last Monday night.

The rezoning request comes from the town, which owns the property at 62-64 Main Street and would like to see it switched over from its institutional zone to mixed use. The town is attempting to sell the property now that the fire department and RCMP have made the move to the new municipal building further up on Main Street.

Bickford said the mixed use designation will accommodate a wider variety of uses on the site  –such as office, service industry, institutional and residential uses.

Presently there are no official development plans for the property although the town has been entertaining submissions from developers or organizations for future use of the building. The town issued a Request for Expression of Interest (REOI) for the building this past fall, calling for development proposals. The town received two, which are under review.

First reading of the rezoning request is expected to come forward during council’s next monthly meeting in February.
