SACKVILLE, N.B. – Sackville and area residents gathered before the town’s RCMP detachment Friday evening for a candlelight vigil to show support for local police in the wake of the fatal shooting of three officers in Moncton last Wednesday evening.

People in this region and across the country were shocked when 24-year-old Justin Bourque of Moncton allegedly went on a shooting spree that killed three officers and wounded two others, kicking off a manhunt that lasted nearly 48 hours before he was apprehended.

Well over 100 people attended Friday’s vigil.

After a moment of silence for the fallen officers, local RCMP Const. Luc Touchette spoke to the crowd, thanking everyone for their ongoing support.

“It’s very important to us to see the support you’re giving us.”

Touchette noted that RCMP officers are often transferred away from family members and become very close to the communities they serve.

“And you guys, believe it or not, become our family,” he said, “because every morning we get up to work (and) get to love the population we work for.”

Touchette also noted how difficult it is for RCMP officers to cope with losing co-workers to violence.

“I had the pleasure to work with all the five members involved in Moncton. I knew them all personally, some of them I knew their wives and their children, and it’s not an easy task.”

He said several Sackville RCMP officers were in Moncton as the search for Bourque unfolded.

“I didn’t go to Moncton on my own. I had to stay back here to take care of everyday business. We had members from Sackville . . . about 75 per cent of our membership who went to Moncton giving a hand.”

Touchette also noted it would be important for members of the public to continue offering their support in the days to come.

“We sure need you to help us out. It’s emotional for everybody, and we’re just human like anybody else.”
