SACKVILLE, N.B. – Sackville has gained significant national exposure thanks to an article published this month in a travel magazine spotlighting several of the town’s unique and treasured attractions.

Sackville and Mount Allison University are featured in the August edition of Air Canada’s inflight travel magazine enRoute, through an article entitled “University Towns That Are (almost) Too Cool For School.”

The magazine, which is offered for free on all Air Canada flights, is seen by hundreds of thousands of people each month.

“This sort of free coverage is extremely valuable for the town,” said Ron Kelly Spurles, Sackville’s tourism manager. “There's no way we could pay for a page of advertising in a magazine that reaches so many people, so we're very fortunate that they chose us and Mount Allison to write about.”

Kelly Spurles said both the town and the university will benefit greatly from this exposure, particularly since the article was targeted to such a wide audience.

“This is sure to translate into visits, and in the case of this article, students and parents also coming to check out our town and Mount Allison.”

The article puts the focus on five university towns worth a visit, simply for their extracurricular activities and unique cultural finds. It’s geared mainly toward parents visiting the town to see their children at university.

For the Sackville/Mount A selection, the author Michael Landry highlighted several of his favourite places in town and also contacted several local business and shop owners to “see what were the newest, cool fun spots in town.”

The article describes Sackville as a “winning mix of rural retreat and cosmopolitan enclave,” thanks to sites such as The Bakery at Cranewood, the Sackville Harness shop, the Sackville Music Hall, Thunder & Lightning pub, the Vogue Cinema, Owens Art Gallery and Struts Gallery.

Other university towns mentioned in the article are Prince George, BC, Lethbridge, AB, Peterborough, ON, and Sherbrooke, QC.
