SACKVILLE, N.B. – The town is putting a renewed focus on expanding the programs and activities offered in the community.

With a recent restructuring within town hall comes a new department of recreation programs and events, which will be placing its efforts on increasing the amount and variety of recreational and leisure services for all ages to encourage active and healthy lifestyles.

The department, headed up by newly-hired manager Matt Pryde, will not only build on the programming already offered directly by the town but will also support other local organizations in offering their own programs.

Coun. Shawn Mesheau, liaison councillor for the new department, said at last month’s council meeting that there has already been signs over the past few months of an expanded programming line-up, “with lots of activity happening this summer.”

From bus trips to Magic Mountain and the Halifax Tattoo to movie nights at Lillas Fawcett Park, and skateboarding and BMX competitions, there has been plenty to keep residents busy this summer.

And participation increased as the summer went on, thanks to a greater use of social media such as Facebook and Twitter.

Mesheau also pointed out that, despite the closure of the Bill Johstone Memorial Park this summer due to renovations, the town has managed to host its programming in a variety of other locations in July and August, from Lillas Fawcett Park to Bridge Street to the Waterfowl Park entrance and more. This has kept the programs fresh and has helped to service different areas of the community that aren’t always utilized, he said.

“Hopefully that will create other opportunities down the road,” said Mesheau.

A survey is expected to go out this fall, asking residents what types of programs or events they would like to see pursued – “to see where the interests might lie in the community.”
