The UNB Varsity Reds, 2011 Atlantic Champions, have added an additional exhibition game to their 2012-13 non-conference schedule and will play the Portland Pirates of the AHL on Thursday, Oct. 4 at 1 p.m. in Portland.
The game will be the first of a three-game US road trip for UNB. After playing Portland, they will travel to Boston where they will play the 2012 NCAA champions Boston College Terriers on Saturday, Oct. 6, at 7 p.m. before finishing up the trip in Orono, Maine, the following day at 4 p.m. against top ranked University of Maine Black Bears.
This will be UNB's second game against the Pirates as they dropped a 4-2 decision to Portland in 2009. Previous games for UNB versus pro competition included a 3-1 victory over the New York Islander Rookies in 2007, a loss to the NY Islander Rookies the following year at the Aitken Centre and a 3-3 tie against the former AHL Saint John Flames in 2003.
Altogether UNB will play eight pre-season games in what head coach Gardiner MacDougall calls, “one of our most competitive non-conference schedules ever,” before starting their 2012-13 AUS regular season with their home opener against the St. Thomas Tommies on Oct. 12, 2012.
