An enthusiastic crowd gathered at the start line on Park Street in Sackville for the ninth annual 5 K Folly Sunday on afternoon. A sizzling run by Greg Trenholm, who has only been running a few years, led him to first place in 17:41, one hundred seconds ahead of his time last year. He was followed by a crowd from the champion Mount Allison cross country running team – Parker Vaughn (18:08), coach Steve Scott in 18:21, Matt Wheaton in 18:34 and a somewhat sluggish Mitch Peters(19:44). Justin Thomas in 20:21 was 50 seconds faster than in 2009, followed clossly by a much improved Peter Wellband (20:53). Iain Summerby-Murray(21:19) narrowly inched out his Dad Rob, discovering first hand the physiology of anerobia.
Marya Peters was the first female crossing the line in 22:13, followed by Sara Thomas (22:37) and Grade 6 student Annie Dysart (23:34), who also trounced her father by a whopping two seconds.
First-timer Jesse Wheaton was the first Marshview student in 23:02, followed by Lian Young (23:14).
This year there was a big crowd from the Clan Acton and Associates, this year under the Athletic Performance Sackville banner, clearly showing the benefits of cross training. Led by Darlene Acton (27:26) and Donna Beal (28:57), along with a host of newcomers like Joanne Smith (34:22) and Nancy Estabrooks (34:18) this team made up over one quarter of the field.
Special mention should go to Mary Kate MacLean who knocked a remarkable 17 plus minutes off last years time!
Results will be available online at http://www.runnb.ca.
Thanks again to all the volunteers, the Town of Sackville, Mount Allison and the helpful RCMP officer who did a great job making the race safe.
