The Mount Allison Hockey Mounties travelled to P.E.I. on Saturday, Jan. 19, to play their fourth game of the season against the Panthers. The first three games were close, and Saturday's was no different. The Panthers scored two goals early in the third period and held on to edge the Mounties 3-2.
UPEI jumped out to a 1-0 lead at 2:21 of the first period when Panthers' captain Jamie Lynn Donaldson's point shot eluded Mountie goalie Meghan Corley-Byrne. That was the only scoring in the period.
At 11:38 of the second period, the Mounties' Lindsay James took a drop pass from line mate Mackenzie Lalonde and ripped a high shot over the shoulder of Panther goalie Kristy Dobson to tie the game at 1-1 after 40 minutes.
The Panthers buried two loose pucks in the first two minutes of the third period to once again take the lead. But just over five minutes later rookie Kara Anthony scored her third of the season to close the gap to one goal. Kristen Cooze and Beth Deveaux assisted on the goal. The Mounties had numerous scoring chances in the last 10 minutes but as has so often happened this year, were unable to get the puck behind the opposing goalie.
Megan Entwistle continued her fine play of late and once again lead the Mounties with four shots on net. Captain Lauren Oickle, and rookies Shelby Colton, Sara Hubble, and Sarah Gagnier did not dress due to injuries or illness.
The Mounties will spend this week preparing to host Université de Moncton on Saturday, Jan. 26, at the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre. Game time is 2 p.m.
