SACKVILLE, N.B. – Mount Allison’s department of athletics and recreation is pleased to announce that Mounties hockey netminder Kate O’Brien has been named the Joey’s Pizza and Pasta Athlete of the Week for March 3-10.
O’Brien and her hockey teammates took Moncton to game three in the inaugural Subway AUS women’s hockey best of three championship series before losing 2-0 on Saturday night. O’Brien, a third-year goalie from Greenwood, NS, played all three games of the final series and was very strong in goal to backstop the Mounties. O’Brien also was instrumental in series wins for the Mounties over St. Thomas (quarterfinals) and StFX (semi-finals).
In the finals, O’Brien and the Mounties lost game one by a score of 2-1 in Moncton. The Mounties actually scored as time expired but the goal was judged to have gone in just after the buzzer. In game two, the Mounties fell down 2-0 early but then delighted the hometown crowd by roaring back to win 3-2 in overtime. During the game O’Brien made many key saves to preserve the win for the Mounties. On Saturday, O’Brien was once again very steady in the Mounties net as the Mounties eventually fell 2-0.
