SACKVILLE, N.B. – One of Sackville’s baseball teams is now geared up with new uniforms thanks to the Sackville Fire & Rescue Department.
The Mosquito team, the youngest of the three baseball divisions within Sackville Minor Baseball, recently received 16 new sets of uniforms donated by the fire department – sets which included baseball jerseys, the t-shirts to go underneath and pants, a value of over $1,000.
Travis Estabrooks, a member of the committee within the fire department that helped raise the funds through a weekly Nascar pool, said the firefighters were looking for a way to help out the sports programs in town and heard that the baseball association was looking for assistance.
“Each year, we plan to donate to different teams in need,” he said.
The new uniforms will help the Mosquito team match up with their older counterparts, the Peewee and Bantam teams, with all the players now being able to wear the same color and style of uniform. Some of the older uniforms were green and blue instead of the red that will now be worn by all of the teams; and some of the jerseys were t-shirt style instead of the vests. Some of the uniforms were getting pretty worn as well and new ones were much needed, said Chris Vogels, president of Sackville Minor Baseball.
He said this donation by the fire department was greatly appreciated and helps in a big way to ensure the players can be suited up the way they should be, without adding to the costs to parents.
“We’ve always tried to keep our fees low for baseball, so that everyone who wants to play can play,” said Vogels.
Because of this, Sackville Minor Baseball is run on a very tight budget and is not able to put funds into extras each year.
“So anytime we can get support like this, it helps.”
He said Suzanne Somers, who is uniform manager for Sackville Minor Baseball, was also a great help in getting the information and ordering the uniforms for the team.
