The Sackville Mini Titan girls have had a successful year to date. With much improvement and teamwork, they showed their abilities and improved in each game and tournament throughout the basketball season.
Only five returning players from the previous year, the team was comprised of five Grade 6 players, and seven Grade 5 players.
The team played in the following four tournaments this season. In River Valley, they took fourth place. This was the frist true test of the year, with many games being cancelled due to the weather conditions. Now they knew what was expected. The girls were ready to continue, as they saw the plays that they had been practicing were working, and they knew what to do.
The girls brought home a silver medal from the Miramichi Invitational Tournament. What a game. Down at half-time, the girls did not give up. The comeback in the second half of the game showed the efforts and abilities of the girls as a team.
The Amherst Invitational Tournament brought them home a bronze medal. This was a great finish. Through the whole game, it was back and forth with Oxford being up by two points, then Sackville. Never giving up, they finished and won by four points.
They attended provincials in Woodstock on the weekend of March 14-15 placing third. Down by 15 points at half-time, in the end, they won the game by 20 points to take home the bronze.
Never giving up, the Mini Titans are now known as the comeback queens, and never so evident as in the Sackville Mini Invitational Tournament, which was held the weekend of March 28-29 at the Mount Allison athletic centre. The Mini Girls went undefeated throughout the tournament, winning in the final game against Cumberland North Academy of Amherst, N.S. Sackville had the lead once in the game, in the first segment. Down, but not out, at half-time, they did not give up, creeping up on the lead Cumberland North had, up to the end. With 40 seconds left, they finally had the lead and held it to the last buzzer. The girls showed great team play and efforts in the final game, and their committment as a team.
Throughout the season, every game and tournament was approached with great effort, team play and sportsmanship. They certainly extolled the best of the local basketball association as well as the town of Sackville for their efforts.
