The Port Elgin mini boys basketball team came up just four points shy of a gold medal at the Henry Davis Memorial Tournament held over the weekend at Port Elgin Regional School.

The event was sponsored by friends of the well-known, long-time Port Elgin teacher and basketball coach who passed away in 2009.

Organizers of the event unveiled an appropriate quote painted in memory of Davis on the wall of the school's gymnasium where he had spent much time teaching physical education and coaching basketball. Davis's wife Betty was on hand for the unveiling.

The tournament saw play by teams of both mini boys and girls from Port Elgin and neighbouring communities. In girls regular play, the host mini girls under coaches Jennifer Grant and Heather Tingley downed the Riverview Mini Girls Royals 61-30. Then, in a knuckle-biter score of 63-61, lost to the Cyrus Eaton Eagles from Pugwash. It was Port Elgin over Riverview 55-31, with the host team winning second place in the tournament semi-final.

Port Elgin players Sabrina Hepditch, Cassandra Barczyk, Hannah Walton and Kaylee Butcher were named MVPs during the tournament. Other team members include: Destiny Grant, Abigail Lane, Kyla Davis, Jesse Davis, Emily Field, Sarah Crossman and Madison Tingley.

The Port Elgin Mini Boys, under coach Mike Campbell, defeated the Moncton Hawks by a score of 61-48, then trounced the Riverview Royals 45-30. In the championship game the final score was 38-34 with the Riverview team taking gold and the Port Elgin boys the silver.

Port Elgin players Evan Davis, Wesley Lane, MacKenzie Campbell and Nevin Becker were named MVPs during the tournament. Other mini boys' team members include: Thomas Campbell, Sam Alward, Tyler Allen, Josiah Becker, Nick Butcher and Ray Hepditch.

Meanwhile, the Sackville Titan mini boys lost 38-33 to the Hawks and again to the Royals by a score of 34-32 in regular play.

In the semi-final game, it was Sackville over Riverview 49-45 with the mini Titans taking third place in and Riverview fourth place.

The second round of play for the Henry Davis Memorial Tournament for bantam boys and girls will be held at Port Elgin Regional School this coming weekend.
