Nicholas Giroux was the winning goalie as the Sackville Bantam Rangers (team 2) defeated the hometown Riverview Royals 5-3 last Wednesday.

It was Giroux's first game in net since he lost his leg in a bicycle accident last May. Although he faced 20 shots during the game, he has had to face bigger challenges than pucks flying at his head.

He has endured vigorous physiotherapy, dealt with the use of a wheelchair, crutches and finally, the fitting of a prosthetic leg. He has worked through all this with patience and determination.

The game opened with both teams evenly matched. Riverview challenged early and Giroux was forced to come up with a big save in the first minute of play. It was scoreless until 3:50 left in the first period when Riverview scored and then they added another marker two minutes later.

The Rangers got on the scoreboard three minutes into the second period when Brandon Steeves converted a smooth pass from Ben Hicks. The second period ended with the Royals leading 2-1.

Early in the third period, Sarah Langille passed to Josh Chase, who shot on net and Ryan Fury bagged the rebound. Less than two minutes later, Steeves beat the defense, deked the goalie and slid the puck into the open net. The Rangers continued to press in the Royals end of the ice and 39 seconds after the second Steeves goal, Langille ripped a wrist shot from the point and handy for the rebound was Trent Lirette; it was the go ahead goal and his first of the season. With 5:43 remaining in the game Riverview made it a one-goal game once again as Avery Shannon scored unassisted.

In an exciting finish during the final few minutes the Rangers held off the Royals with some strong goaltending from Giroux. The victory was capped when Kurt Touchette passed to a wide open Brandon Steeves, who finished off his hat trick with 27 seconds left on the clock. This was a game for family, coaches, teammates and fans alike to be proud and amazed of Giroux's great hockey comeback.

    Bicycle Accident

When I was a kid I was in a bicycle accident where I got pitched over the handlebars and did a front flip, landing sitting down. It was astonishing and all I'd done was use the front brake alone on a hill going fairly quick.
