Once again the Sackville Swim Club enjoyed another golden performance at the Saint John Long Course championship meet. This event was swum in the 50m Canada Games pool in Saint John and it brought together 200 swimmers representing 20 teams from New Brunswick, Maine and Quebec.
A small team of seven swimmers from Sackville brought home 20 medals and an overall fourth-place team finish.
Coach John Peters was extremely proud of his team's performance.
"The team was on fire, swimming a best time percentage of over 90 per cent and each team member qualifying for finals and scoring team points. It was fun to watch the team come together and swim so fast," he said.
On her way to a six-medal performance (five gold and a silver) Marya Peters, for the third time this year, broke the provincial record in the 50m back- stroke and was named swimmer of the meet.
Dylan Berry and Mitchell Peters also had multi-medal efforts. Like Marya, Dylan won six medals, including five gold and one bronze. Mitchell, representing SSC for the last time, had two gold and three silver medals. Mitchell is graduating this year and hopes to compete for Mount A in the fall.
Other medal performances were achieved by Shelby Higgins and Brenna Rothfuss. Shelby and Brenna, swimming in their first long course championship, were able to secure a silver and bronze medal. Both girls are showing great promise and their coach is very excited about their progress this year.
Also swimming in her first long-course meet, Breanne Estabrooks had an awesome meet with five best-time and three final swims. David Summerby-Murray and Erin Berry combined for eight final swims and six best times, scoring a combined 15 team points.
Both Dylan and Marya attended an elite age group camp and an award banquet in Campbellton this past weekend. Sackville will be well represented at the awards dinner with six swimmers being named top 10 swimmer status - Mitchell, Mikhel and Marya Peters, Dylan Berry, Shelby Higgins and Brenna Rothfuss. Marya will be awarded top female swimmer of the year for her record-breaking performances. Team manager Paul Berry was named volunteer of the year for his 15 years of service to the provincial organization and coach Peters was named coach of the year.
