The event is still more than half a year away, but Sackville's tourism staff is already preparing for an influx of about 1,300 athletes, along with their coaches and family members, who will be staying in town during next July's IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships.
The athletes will be housed on the university campus during the international track event from July 19-25, 2010 and the town of Sackville is aiming to work with local organizations to run events and make the athletes feel welcome during their stay.
"We have a big job ahead of us to promote Sackville and find ways to interest the visitors," said Coun. Joyce O'Neil during council's monthly meeting on Nov. 9.
O'Neil said that the staff at the tourism department is continuing meetings with the IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships' coordinating office and Mount Allison University to fine-tune the details of the week-long events.
