SACKVILLE, N.B. – The Tantramar Heritage Trust has announced the publication of a sequel to their best-selling 2013 Sackville Then and Now: New Brunswick’s Oldest Town in Photographs. Entitled People of the Tantramar and written by local author Charlie Scobie, it will feature biographical sketches of 47 women and men who have lived in the Tantramar area over the centuries. The book is due for publication on Sept. 21, 2018, at a cost of $25, but will be available at a pre-publication discount price of $22.50 per copy if ordered and paid for by July 31, 2018.
A French spy who betrayed his own people, the leader of a pro-American rebellion, a sensational murder victim, the builder of 60 wooden sailing ships, the Father of Canadian Literature, a forgotten and rediscovered young woman artist, an eccentric academic, a World War I flying ace, a world champion speed skater, the designer of the Canadian flag, “Mr. Canada,” the Poet Laureate of Sackville, an actress and star of stage and screen: these are a few of the colourful cast of characters who will appear in People of the Tantramar. Designed for the general reader and written in an interesting and readable style, the book should have a wide appeal. Through the lives of these 47 people it will offer an introduction to the history of the Tantramar area of south-east New Brunswick.
Each character in the book will be profiled in a two-page spread that will include a picture (portrait or photograph) of the person, and on the opposite page a photo of a location, building, memorial or some other feature associated with the subject that can still be seen in the area today.
The book will be in a similar format to Sackville Then and Now: hardback, glossy paper, 108 pages, 10 x 8.5 inches. It will be printed by award-winning colour printers Friesens of Altona, Manitoba. Book design will be by graphic designer Mary Scobie of Victoria, B.C.
A book launch is planned for Friday, Sept. 21, 2018 at 7:30 p.m., at the Sackville town hall as part of the Fall Fair. The book will go on sale at the book launch.
