The New Brunswick Youth Choir (NBYC), a four-day choral residency for singers between the ages of 16 and 24, is now accepting applications.
The residency is an intensive weekend of training and education and a unique opportunity for singers from across New Brunswick to pursue excellence in choral music under the direction of a renowned conductor, with François Ouimet serving as this year’s clinician.
The residency also provides an opportunity for like-minded students to meet and connect with one another and for students where music programming is less available to learn and interact with their peers.
Members of the NBYC come from across New Brunswick, from Grand Falls to Miramichi City, from Sackville to Saint John, and from both of New Brunswick’s official linguistic communities. New Brunswick Youth Choir members have included published composers, solo performers in classical, jazz, and pop idioms, future conductors, instrumentalists and music educators and others planning a career in music. There have been just as many who, though pursuing careers in other areas, have made music part of their lives for the physical, mental and spiritual benefits that choral music yields—who sing for the sheer joy of singing.
Singers aged 16-24 are eligible to audition for the NBYC. Candidates should have some singing experience and it is strongly recommended that they can read music.
Accommodations and cost. NBYC members who must travel will be billeted with local families. Cost is $225 and includes all music, rooms and meals. A $50 deposit is due March 9, 2018, $25 of which is non-refundable. Auditions. All candidates, including former NBYC members, must submit an updated musical c.v. Candidates who are not former NBCF members must also submit: 1. An audition recording. The recording will consist of two vocal exercises which will be provided, and two songs sung a cappella, one in the singer’s preferred language and one in a different language of the singer’s choice. 2. A brief letter explaining why the applicant wishes to join the NBYC. 3. A letter of reference from a voice teacher, music teacher or choir director.
The four day choral residency will take place May 3-6, 2018, at Université de Moncton.
