The latest forecast from Environment Canada Tuesday afternoon, July 10, is predicting Tropical Storm Chris to become a hurricane off the coast of Carolina this evening.

Environment Canada has issued tropical cyclone information statements for most of the island of Newfoundland except the west coast and Great Northern Peninsula.

As of right now, tropical storm Chris is located roughly 335 kilometres southeast of Cape Hatteras with maximum sustained winds of 110 kilometres per hour. The system is moving northeast at 15 km/h.

Environment Canada says southeastern Newfoundland is the most likely land areas to receive direct impacts, with the system potentially making landfall as a post-tropical storm later Thursday night or early Friday morning.

Heavy rain, strong winds, and heavy waves with storm surge along parts of the coast are possible.

Parts of Newfoundland may be in store for in excess of 50 millimetres of rain or more if the current track holds.

The most likely area for strongest winds will be over the Avalon Peninsula, according to the government weather agency.
