SACKVILLE, N.B. – The Tantramar Titans last won a provincial crown in varsity girls’ soccer in 1996. With four consecutive appearances in the sport’s last final four events, the Sackville squad brought home gold and the banner from the AA Championships held in Campbellton on Saturday, Nov. 4. The local squad’s best results had previously come in 2014 when the club won silver.
The eastern conference regular season and playoff champions, the Titans defeated the Roland-Pépin Prédateurs 3-2 and lost 3-1 to the Bathurst Phantoms at Regionals held in Sackville on Oct. 28 to advance to provincials as North-East #2.
Play at provincials opened early Saturday when Tantramar defeated the South-West #1 team, the Rothesay Red Hawks, on Campbellton’s Oval Field. Grade 11 striker Kyla Davis and Grade 9 striker Sara Grant scored in the first half for a 2-0 half-time lead. Rothesay scored at 42:27 but the Titans hung on for the win and earned a chance to advance to the final.
The Hampton Huskies, South-West #2, defeated the Bathurst Phantoms, North-East #1, by a score of 2-0 in the other provincial semi.
The gold medal match was played on the Tide Field in Tide Head where Tantramar captured the 2017 AA title by defeating Hampton 2-1. Grade 11 striker Kyla Davis and Grade 10 mid Anna Crossman led the Titan attack. Hampton scored one in the last minute of the match but the die was cast for the Titans – provincial champions.
