After finishing second in the Eastern Soccer Conference, the Nev Garrity-coached lady Titans soccer team pounded out a hard earned 2-1 victory over the pennant winning Louis J. Robichaud Patriotes in the championship playoff held in Grand Digue.
Grade 10 striker Kyla Davis scored first in the game to provide the one-goal edge at half time. Eight minutes into the second half, Grade 11 centre mid MacKenzie Allen singed the twine with the eventual game winner. Two minutes later LJR scored but a strong Titan defense and sustained effort from the girls ensured the Titan victory.
This victory not only brought home the championship banner but catapulted the Titan ladies into the AA regional playdowns as the number one seed.
Tantramar faced off against number two Louis Mailloux of Caraquet and fought through a tough contest to eventually take a 1-0 victory – good enough to earn a ticket to the provincial playoffs at Perth-Andover’s Southern Victoria High School this weekend.
MacKenzie Allen played heroine in the match, scoring just five minutes into the game. With most of the game played in the centre third of the pitch, the Titans’ stalwart defense played another great game, with solid work from Grade 11 keeper Abby Lane, who earned the shutout.
The other regional semi final saw James M. Hill defeat LJR 1-0 to advance.
The Titans had a tough battle against James M. Hill in their second match as they lost 3-0. But the Titans qualified for the provincial final playoff being one of just four teams from around New Brunswick going to Perth-Andover this weekend.
Meanwhile the boys’ Titan squad has added another conference crown.
This comes in spite of the fact the football team has 40 players or 20 percent of the male students at the school.
But coach Matt Wheaton found methods to field a strong soccer entry and after finishing second in the conference went on to down JM Armstrong of Salisbury 3-2 in a sudden death playoff and then knocked off pennant winning Louis J. Robichaud High 1-0 to advance to regionals. Ben Kummer notched the only marker of the contest, which was all they needed thanks to a strong defensive team effort and stellar goaltending.
This sent the Titans to regionals where they were defeated by a strong team from Polyvente Roland-Pepin and thus were prevented from advancing o the provincial championship tournament.
Coach Wheaton says the team is excited for next season, as they got better with each game this year and are hungry to get a shot at provincial honours.
He says graduating players are James Wilmot, Ryan Estabrooks and Ben Kummer so the 2017 representative from Tantramar should be improved due to the value of an added year of experience.
The school now has two potential provincial championships with the football and ladies’ soccer teams proceeding down the road. This can only happen when there is a combination of factors coming into play. The school administration, especially principal Susan Lafford and athletic director David Hicks, the various coaches and especially the athletes obviously are on the same page in order to make such things happen. It definitely shows that the tiny school on the marsh has the potential to challenge much larger institutions and often come away victorious.
