SYDNEY, N.S. — A 28,000-square-foot FedEx Ground distribution centre is expected to open in Cape Breton during the summer of 2020.
The facility is now under construction at 325 Vulcan Avenue, which was once the home of the local Schwartz Furniture location. In recent years it was also the home of a women’s gym, a call centre and the Sydney flea market.
Westco Sydney Inc., owned by U.S.-based retail property acquisition firm Westmoreland Company, bought the property from the Schwartz family in July.
“The site was chosen because of its ease of access to major highways, proximity to customers’ distribution centres and a strong local community workforce for recruiting employees,” said David Westrick, spokesperson for FedEx Ground, in an emailed response to questions from the Cape Breton Post
“The new facility is part of a network expansion to boost daily package volume capacity and further enhance the speed and service capabilities of the FedEx Ground network.”
FedEx Ground is a package shipping company that is a subsidiary of the FedEx Corporation. It is headquartered in Moon Township, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Pittsburgh.
Since 2005, the company has opened 17 new hubs featuring advanced material-handling systems and expanded or relocated more than 500 local facilities throughout the U.S. and Canada.
Westrick told the Cape Breton Post staffing needs for the new distribution centre being built in Sydney have yet to be determined.
