Have you ever walked into your space and thought, ‘I need to pack away things, stuff I either don’t use very much or things that do not make me feel calm.’

If you open up a cupboard in your kitchen or a linen closet, what would you see?

Being organized daily and being a storage guru can be your thing, but it does not come easily for everyone. In fact, it can cause quite a lot of stress in a household.

Part of how you plan your storage depends on how often you need to access your things. For example, you would not put your things at the back of an area if you use it every day. That would not be functional. So my first suggestion is to always make a list.

Many people tend to think of only using bookcases for storage, as they can be placed up against a wall and are easy to access.

Before you start thinking about what type of storage you want, I would like to offer a word of caution — no matter how great a piece looks in a store or online, do not buy anything without doing some homework first.

Measure your space and measure the piece you are buying to use as storage. Will it fit?

What colour and what shape do you want?

Cover or no cover?

It seems simple, but it’s not an easy decision to make. You will be looking at it for a while. Remember, a well planned storage area is about bringing order into our life. Will make it make it easier to manage? Because at the end of the day, most of us need a space to wind down in and when that space is visually orderly, it just works.

Now take the test and walk your space looking for calm and order. Does your space pass the test?
