More tobacco intercepted on its way into Springhill prison


SPRINGHILL – For the second time in a week officials at the Springhill medium security institution have intercepted a substantial amount of tobacco.

On Oct. 3, a package containing a number of unauthorized items was seized at the prison. Among the items were 11 bales of tobacco with an estimated institutional value of $11,000. The seizure came several days after 24 bales of tobacco, with an institutional value of $24,000, were intercepted.
Police have been notified and the institution is investigating.
The Correctional Service of Canada introduced a complete smoking ban in all federal correctional institutions in 2008.
CSC has set up a telephone tip line for all federal institutions so that it may receive additional information about activities relating to security at CSC institutions.
These activities may be related to drug use or trafficking that may threaten the safety and security of visitors, inmates and staff members working at CSC institutions.
