SACKVILLE, N.B. — The Mayor’s Roundtable on Climate Change will be hosting a public forum on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 1 p.m. at Sackville town hall.

The forum is an opportunity for individuals, groups, businesses, etc., to present suggestions to a panel of roundtable members on what the town and/or community can do to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Following climate strike events organized by local students throughout 2019, Sackville Town Council declared a climate crisis and, in response, committed to establish the Mayor’s Roundtable on Climate Change. The roundtable is an invited group of town, academic, professional experts and community stakeholders assembled by the mayor. The mandate of the group is to provide advice and guidance to the Town of Sackville in improving its efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change, and to design long-term structures to sustain those efforts.

The public forum is one initiative that the roundtable is undertaking, whereby members of the Sackville and greater community can contribute to its mandate.

“The roundtable has been an extremely positive and important initiative for our community. It has become increasingly clear that we must find innovative ways to mitigate and adapt to climate change. This public forum will provide an opportunity to share ideas on what we, as a municipality and as a community, can do to better help address the climate crisis,” said Mayor John Higham.

The forum is open to the public, and the roundtable seeks a variety of perspectives and ideas, including projects, policy directions, partnerships, research, communication, and other topics to be tabled at the event.

All presentations will be made to a panel of eight roundtable members, who will report back to the larger Roundtable on Climate Change before providing a summary of the day to Sackville Town Council. While oral presentations are encouraged, written or electronic submissions can also be made before, during or after the forum. Following presentations, there will be an opportunity at the forum for panel members, participants and observers to informally socialize and continue discussions on points raised and opportunities for action.

If you are interested in making a presentation, or providing a submission, contact the clerk’s office at [email protected] or 364-4930. The event is open to the public for those wanting to observe the proceedings or meet some of the participants.
