SACKVILLE, N.B. – Sackville RCMP has launched a new registry that should increase the likelihood of lost or stolen bicycles being returned to their owners.
Jean-Francois LeBlanc, community program officer (CPO) for the RCMP, said the Sackville station deals with about 15 recovered bikes each year and, in most cases, officers are unable to find the owner and have no way of knowing who they belong to. This leaves many of those recovered bicycles unclaimed and LeBlanc said he hopes this new bicycle registration program will change that.
“If you come in and register your bike and we find that bike, we’d be able to match it,” said LeBlanc.
All residents with a bicycle are encouraged to come in and register their bike, which includes filling out a registration form and entering pertinent information on the bicycle such as make, model, year, cost and serial number. That information will go into a database at the Sackville RCMP office and can be used to help locate bikes in the event they’re stolen.
“If it’s stolen, we’ll have the serial number, the make, the model . . .so if it’s ever found, we’ll know it’s yours.”
The registration form can be picked up and dropped back off at the Sackville RCMP station at 31 Main Street and Leblanc said he hopes citizens will take advantage of this program.
It takes only a few minutes to register, he said, and increases the chances of being reunited with your bike should it be recovered.
